THE SMELLS OF SUNDAYS
Today I awoke of the smells of Sundays gone by. I remember waking as a teenager at 10:30 or 11am just laying in bed. The quiet of the house all around me and holding me in its arms. The comfort of my bed as I lay alone and enjoy the peace of cool clean sheets and soft pillows. And with the feeling of peace thoughtout my mind and enjoying just laying there. The quiet peace we all wish we can find again as we age into chaos. To complete this most wonderful wake up were the smells which inched their way up the stairs and under my door.
The sweet smell of pancakes or waffles mixed with the salty smell of bacon fried up to its most enjoyabe almost crispness. The images I can still conjour up of my Dad seated at the table reading the Sunday paper all stretched out aross the table with coffee mug in hand. My Mom standing at the stove in a floor length robe which zipped all the way up the middle. Sometimes the quiet of talk radio or classical music being played in the background.
This morning as I awoke at 10:30am and laid in my most peaceful bedroom of all white these memories came flooding back to me. So as I lay with my son, I too want to give him and my daughter memories to last a lifetime. Memories to cherish and comfort him when he os older and living the life of chaos and looking for just a little bit of peace. Memories of smells of moment in time.
So I went into my incredibly small nyc kitchen and began my creation of peaceful smells of Sunday. I placed my bacon on a rack within a cookie sheet and began cooking it in my Holly Hobbie 20'' oven. After about 20 mins the smell seem to waft about the apartment and the inquiries of whats for breakfast seem to pour in. Being that I am a Mom of the 21st century and totally spoiling my kids the answer was easy to one who wanted pancakes and the other who would only eat waffles. But of course I will make both from scratch (and a little help from bisquick). Soon too I had recreated the sweet and salty smells of Sundays gone by both for my kids to remember and me to absorb and give me that feeling of complete peace if only until the smells disappated .
In this busy world of everthing too fast and quick, too loud and chaotic especially here in NYC we all need to take a Sunday Morning ( or a patch of time) just to remember the sweet smells of times gone by and the memories associated, life is quick enough. Give yourself that moment of Peace and be true to YOU.
